WTF Is Business Casual?
If you’re in university and have been invited to a networking session, or if your in work and your employer is holding a lunch, dinner or the dreaded ‘drinks’, then you may have gotten the ‘wtf’ moment of trying to understand what clothes in your wardrobe suffice as ‘business casual’. Personally for me, I interpret ‘business casual’ as solely ‘business’ so as not to go in with my pyjamas which is possibly the only thing in my current wardrobe that one can class as casual (yes, I lead a very boring life of networking events and work here and there). If you do have this panic then do not despair, for I have figured out the correct balance of business and casual which you should take as gospel.
The trick is to work backwards. Wear the most business of business attire. Let’s say tailored trousers and a white shirt from TopShop, add this with a blazer from New Look (because you obviously couldn’t afford the exact replica from Zara). Now for the black patent 2.5 inch court heels from Dorothy Perkins. Phew.
Okay now to add a little ‘casual’ replace the white shirt for a patterned blouse (this must have colour, greys, blacks are not allowed unless it’s polka dots). From here we remove the blazer and don a cardigan (a plain colour so as not to clash with the inner blouse) and the court heels have got to go! Maybe replaced with some nice comfy flats. And there you have it, the perfect balance between business and casual. The most important thing is to understand where you’re going and how business or how casual an event will be. Unfortunately this has nothing to do with style but more to do with common sense, which we from Eat More Cake know you have plenty of.
The most important tip for business causal is to add some colour into your outfit. Many a time I have walked into a room and seen nothing casual in people’s attire and sometimes a bit too much. (Jeans, trainers, converses et al. should never set foot in central London unless you’re meeting friends or clubbing (if you club in trainers, I am totally judging you).
But if you are having a total breakdown on business casual just follow my guide, and you wont make a total mess of yourself anywhere.
