Web Series Review: Her Story
I had never heard of the Her Story show prior to reading an article on it one random Thursday night. The article didn’t give too much away, but basically said it was an online show following the dating lives of trans and queer women. I immediately went on YouTube to start watching it and right from episode one, I was hooked. Unfortunately there are only six episodes (cry with me), however, it is still enough for you to fall in love with the story and characters.
Her Story is co-written and co-produced by its main characters Jen Richards (who plays Violet) and Laura Zak (who plays Allie). Both are social activists and are very talented, accomplished women (you may recognise Jen if you watched I Am Cait on E!). The other awesome characters are: Paige (boss ass bitch), James ( I want to chill inside his dimple), Kat (love her carefreeness), Lisa (I hated Lisa, I can’t lie), Bad Penny (her British accent is questionable), Pema (such a cutie) and Jenna (I actually forgot who she was for a quick second LOL).
I don’t want to spoil the show too much for those of you who haven’t seen it yet but honestly, this is one of the best web series I’ve ever seen. The characters are so genuine and the story just makes sense. The pivotal focus isn’t the fact that these women are trans/queer, they just are. Of course how they identify themselves plays a role in their dating lives, but it isn’t a big deal which is what I love the most. You can also tell that it wasn’t written with the intention to please cis-gendered folks. Instead it builds authentic relationships between characters without coming across like it’s trying to teach the audience something. It does its job; it entertains its viewers. Here’s hoping that there’s a season two and it comes out very soon!
I’ll keep this short because I don’t want to say too much but check the show out on YouTube, I promise you won’t regret it. Leave a comment and let me know what you think!
(P.S. – Paige is a bad bitch!)
