Shining A Light On SlinkyLinks
I believe we need to shout more about British designers who craft such incredible handmade pieces. SlinkyLinks is a handmade jewellery designer, making fantastic statement pieces which are light, classic and edgy. I spoke to its creator Melodie Telliez, who has an interesting story to tell!
Melodie, made her first leather jewellery as Christmas presents for her friends and family – which went down a treat. This moved her to open up shop on Etsy and with things going well, SlinkyLinks was born. “Now I can’t imagine doing anything else,” says Melodie.
“I used to work for a shoe designer in London and I couldn’t stand how much of the leather was wasted in the shoemaking process.”
“When cutting the patterns out of the skins, you always end up with bits and pieces that are of no use and they used to be thrown away. Considering the quality, price and environmental cost of leather, I decided to act.”
For all us creative types, something inspires us somewhere along the line. Melodie takes inspiration from the materials she uses and more.
“I love nature and I also try to depict that in my work. For example with the bird collection, each necklace represents the plumage of a specific bird.”
“Whatever I make, I also keep on eye on the trends. I love fashion so I try to create pieces that will go with your new outfit but won’t fall out of fashion after just one season because they all include a classic element, either in shape or colour.”
“You should be able to wear SlinkyLinks up or down, at work or on a crazy night out, without much effort on your part.”
Melodie says she loves working with leather because of its versatility and variety in colour and texture. She tells me how you can re-shape, wet or even bake leather to create beautiful pieces.
“I use a lot of patent leather in my design, which gives a very sophisticated finish, far from what people pictures when you talk about ‘leather jewellery’.”
“It’s great for jewellery as it’s really light to wear. I love big statement necklaces but most of the time, after a couple of hours my neck hurts. Not with leather, you can barely feel the weight, it’s warm on your skin.”
Melodie has some exciting things in the pipeline for SlinkyLinks – collaboration with designer Ramil Makinanon, photoshoots, TV features and more!
It’s inspiring to see someone creating stunning pieces, with something that otherwise would have been thrown away – SlinkyLinks is worth keeping an eye on.
