Flimsymoon: DIY Crowd-Funded Fashion
More and more independent brands are starting to pop up. Crowd-funding has been, for many newbie brands, the boost they’ve needed at the start. When many of us think of crowd-funded projects, it’s for techy gadgets and novelty items, but it’s also a stepping stone for fashion. With the fashion world being so competitive, sites like Kickstarter can give us all a little hope that we could make something exciting happen.
Freyia Porteous has created the dreamy luxury lingerie brand Flimsymoon which she hopes to launch with help from Kickstarter. She makes intricately embroidered, beaded and screen printed pieces akin to works of art, painstakingly embellished by hand.
We asked Freyia why she chose to use crowd-funding to launch her first collection. She said:
“I decided to try Kickstarter because I wanted to start Flimsymoon with as little debt as possible. Also, it’s an amazing way to both promote your idea and raise money for and awareness of your work.
I am all for the DIY movement in starting and sharing ideas, from the idea of ‘open source’ in software to blogging. I think the internet is a fabulous thing, and it’s so inspiring that, in this tough economic climate, creativity can still blossom, and in fact, thrive.”
Freyia graduated with a BA Hons in Embroidery from Manchester School of Art (part of Manchester Metropolitan University) in 2012. Now here she is, launching her own brand.
“Flimsymoon has been germinating for years. It’s the culmination of all my dreams, ideas, research and studying to date, and means so much to me.
I have always been drawn to themes and knowledge which explore the notion of femininity, romance, sex and relationships. Between the sexes in all areas of thought from philosophy to art to biology to current affairs to folklore to body politics and feminism. Lingerie just seemed like the perfect vehicle to express these ideas.”
Flimsymoon kicked off at the end of August with a Kickstarter launch party with music, fashion, cocktails and contests. This was the first stepping-stone to pull in funds for Flimsymoon collection; “kiss me under Flimsymoon”.
Freyia told us, throughout the campaign Flimsymoon will also be raising money for anti-FGM charity 28toomany. 25% of all donations under £10 to the Kickstarter will go to the charity, to help end this cruel practise.
“Flimsymoon is pro-body positivity and equal opportunities for women, and this is something I want to get more involved with as the brand becomes established.”
So there we have Flimsymoon, crowd-funding and creating lingerie with a difference.
